The “Students Leading Students” (SLS) Model Program is offered to health and safety chapters who support Michigan youth, Student Leadership Services’ mission and current comprehensive prevention. The SLS Model Program is for new or existing Students Leading Students (SLS) High School or Students Taking A New Direction (STAND) Middle School Chapters who would like to take their chapter to the next level of effective prevention. If the health and safety chapter is identified by a different name, the Model Program will help in the transition to Students Leading Students or STAND. Program Goals:
- Increase Supportive Relationships among students and advisors through team work, recognition and student responsibilities, while providing basic needs in a safe environment for all students.
- Increase Interaction among students through creative and challenging leadership opportunities.
- Increase Student Engagement through relevant student activities and program ownership.
- Increase Productivity among students through academics and work.
- Increase Health among students through positive health habits and healthy relationships.
- Increase Connectedness among students through volunteer work in school and in their community.
The SLS MP is a year-long, outcome based, youth-led prevention program. The program consists of five parts.
Part 1: Advisors attend three summer one day Advisor Trainings.
Part 2: Students attend an all day, eight hour SLS training.
Part 3: Chapters complete three Progress Reports and attend one SLS booster training.
Part 4: Chapter participates in the High/Scope Youth Program Quality Assessment evaluation administered by SLS for SLS Chapters.
Part 5: Chapters develop and present student workshops at the SLS 27th Annual High School Leadership Conference in November 2012. Chapters that successfully complete all five parts will receive $5,500 in services, materials, support and incentive funding. SLS is a Michigan student organization that implements the best, proven effective, health and safety programs. The SLS MP plan certifies SLS Chapters that are implementing proven-effective, outcome-based, peer-led safety programs.
