SAMHSA Service to Science Award 2011-2012 Congratulations SLS
Governor Traffic Safety Commission Award for Long-Term Traffic Safety Achievement goes to SLS from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP)! Award to be presented at the Michigan Traffic Safety Summit to George Butler, SLS Board of Director and Sarah Wood, SLS Student of the Year (Chelsea High School) in March 2012.
All of SLS trainings, workshops, conferences and events build skills in youth- with youth training youth. Botvin was one of the first to prove that skills training is where it starts for prevention. Building skills, such as life skills, is the first step.
The SLS SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Service to Science Award will offer the opportunity to 12 SLS High School Chapters to participate in a Chapter Study Project. SLS has selected the experienced SLS Model Programs, SLS Chapters that have thrived for 27 years, and fledgling SLS Chapters to participate. Look for chapter updates in 2012 on this validating project.
Students and advisors of health and safety initiatives turn to Student Leadership Services, Inc. (SLS) for support and trainings. SLS is a Michigan non-profit that fosters peer influence. SLS trainings, events and service projects demonstrate student leadership.
SLS and Health Initiative school-based groups believe that:
The use of alcohol and other drugs is self-defeating.
Driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs endangers lives.
Distracted driving endangers lives.
We endanger our lives when we ride in a vehicle with a reckless or drug affected driver.
Our actions and attitudes have a significant effect on creating positive change.
For 30 years, SLS programming/curriculum has been based on Exemplary and Model Programs of the U.S. Department of Education, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), National Institute for Drug Education (NIDA), Michigan Department of Education, Project Alert, Project Northland, Search Institute 40 Developmental Assets, Botvin's Life Skills, High/Scope Youth Development Training, other researchers and youth development experts.
